Lugol's Iodine
Lugol’s iodine is a preparation of iodine and potassium iodide dissolved in distilled water.
The presence of potassium iodide allows iodine to dissolve and remain stable in aqueous solution.
This combination has been known and used since the nineteenth century.
Iodine
Iodine is a naturally occurring element used in laboratory and pharmaceutical preparations. In Lugol’s iodine solution, elemental iodine provides the characteristic color and active component of the preparation.
Potassium Iodide
Potassium iodide allows iodine to dissolve in distilled water and remain stable in solution. This interaction between iodine and potassium iodide forms the basis of Lugol’s iodine preparations.
